Deceitful employer lists job as remote for "outreach" despite the fact that it's on-site 5 days/week in Wichita, Kansas: 'Can't imagine why they're having trouble recruiting'

If job candidates are expected to tell the truth on their application, shouldn't those same expectations be extended to employers as well? As we always say here at FAIL Blog, employment is a two-way street. Unfortunately, far too many hiring managers and recruiters think they can get away with just about anything in a tough job market. The assumption, of course, is that people seeking employment right now will put up with just about anything. The flip side is that employers like these always seem to underestimate the power of self-respect.

If you're lucky enough, several job candidates will have a list in their minds of the types of workplace environments they will avoid at all costs, and it doesn't stop there. If they want to work in person, they will prioritize those opportunities. If they want to be fully remote with jobs that simply do not need to be on-site, they will advocate for themselves as they should!

  • This candidate read between the lines and questioned the “remote” job opportunity he found, only to discover that the hiring manager purposely listed the posting as “remote" only to gain more outreach. In fact, the opportunity was on-site only in Wichita, Kansas, the entire time!
